Hapee Delivery

December is my most favorite month of the year for many reasons. Let me just say the top three reasons.

First, December 8 is special because my twin kids were born on this day. Second, I like the cold weather for I get to wear my boots and coats (lol!). Third, it's when people are truly nice and happy for it's the time of giving and remembering those around us.

Below is a touching video from Hapee Toothpaste, #HapeeDelivery, wherein they surprised 3 hard working messengers with personalized Christmas gifts. This video actually made me smile and cry at the same time because I know the feeling when I receive deliveries from friends, love ones and sponsors.

Sana madami pang delivery men and women ang mapasaya ngayon Pasko.  Dahil sa kanilang sipag at tiyaga sa pagbagtas ng mainit at matrapik na daan, ang mga importanteng bagay at aginaldo ay nakararating ng maayos sa ating mga tahanan, opisina at kung saan saan pang lugar.

Most Special Stay at Island Cove

We regularly stay at Island Cove Hotel because it does not take much effort for us to drive since the travel time is short because of Cavitex.  From time to time we bring friends and their families so they get to see why we find Island Cove a relaxing place to stay.

Last December 22 to 23 was the most special stay at Island Cove as we were able to bring Papush and Mamush.  Papa can still walk but he's having difficulty, that's why he can't travel much with us. The last time he joined us was 3 years ago at Kamay ni Hesus. At Island Cove, a wheelchair was provided so it made it easier for us to tour Papa around.

My kids don't get to see their grandfather much so it was a joy to see them have fun alternately wheel their Papush around Island Cove.

We didn't worry about what food to serve to Papa because you can choose from ICafe, Sangley Point or The Fishing Village. We settled for The Fishing Village for Papa wants Filipino foods.

As always, we love Island Cove because of the warm accommodation that all the staff provide. Special mention goes to Zarny for the booking and Judah for helping Papa.

An impromptu trip to Bicol didn't prepare us to check the tires. Around Bicutan area, the right front tire exploded. It's good that we were near the bay area.

We didn't bother to call for a rescue since my husband knows what to do.  In less than ten minutes a Sky Way Police arrived. I was worried that we will be given a ticket for obstructing the traffic, but lo and behold, Sir Randy Puray and Sir Raymond Cumeta came to help us.

Thanks Sky Way Police for your quick and efficient response! May your tribe increase!

Flamingo Hotel Review

Having an on-the-go family meant that I have to use all my senses, as well as intuition, work triple time to catch up with our fast lifestyle.  Our Bicol adventure wasn't planned so we didn't know what to expect along the way.  We left Manila around 1pm hoping to reach CWC around 8pm. Unfortunately, we reached Naga around 2am due to heavy rain and road constructions along the stretch of Quezon province and Bicol.

Along the roads, we've spotted many inns but I just couldn't say yes to any of them. I knew that John was so tired from driving so when we saw Flamingo Hotel on the right side of the road, I went down and quickly checked the rates and the available rooms.

Since we will only be staying for 5 hours, I booked the cheapest, DLuxe Single.
At P1,350, with breakfast for two, pwede na!

Upon settling in the room, the first thing I asked is for is an electric kettle. They didn't have but they were kind enough to let us borrow their kitchen thermos so we can have our own coffee in the room and the kids can drink their hot Swiss Miss.

My favorite part of the house and in hotels, the bathroom.  Flamingo's bathroom didn't pass my standards but at least they have hot and cold shower. They also provided 2 toothbrush with 2 sachets of toothpaste (good for 2 use only), 2 very thin soap (good for at least four use) and two towels.

It's good that they sell these stuff, we didn't have to run to the nearest convenience store.

Few exercise machines are available under the stairs that my kids enjoyed
while waiting for our breakfast.

The hallway.

Restaurant

Breakfast for two is incuded in the overnight, so we only ordered for the kids.  Breakfast meal ranges from P150 and above. The serving is small for our standards.

What I had: Daing na Bangus with sunny side up egg. The bangus didn't taste taht well, plus the egg didn't look sunny side anymore.

Julia and Rafael each orderd beef tapa. They both liked the tapa but as they said, "it's too konti".

John ordered smoked bangus. He enjoyed his meal, specially liked the garlic rice.
Again, look at how small the smoked bangus.

Juancho, as always, wants soup and rice. He said that it's Knorr Corn Soup.
He can tell if the soup is cooked from scratch or an instant one.

There's a certain kind of old smell in this place but all in all Flamingo Hotel is clean, except that they're doing a renovation in front so it's a bit dusty on the parking area up to the main door. Flamingo Hotel is an ideal spot for families like us who just needed a place to doze off for a while. We spent P3,300 for the accommodation and the food.

Their other services include 24hr room service, restaurant, free wi-fi, daily newspaper, laundry, free parking, meeting facilities.

Camsur Water Sports Complex Review

The CamSur Watersports Complex was supposed to be the first stop for our Bicol trip. It turned into second because we needed to doze off at Flamingo Hotel for John was tired from driving straight from Manila. It is located within the Provincial Capitol Complex, Cadlan, Pili, Camarines Sur. When you go to Bicol don't miss this six (6)-hectare, world-class watersports complex. And don't just take photos, enjoy the different water sports they offer, namely waveskating, kneeskating, waterskiing and wakeboarding.

For only P165 per hour, you get free use of basic equipment (beginner wakeboards), free basic and safety instruction by CWCs resident instructors and operators, world class obstacle courses designed to challenge even the most advanced riders yet safe enough for the brave ones who dare to try tricks for the very first time,  like what John, Julia and Rafel did.

Besides the ramps and obstacles, the park has also set aside a beach volleyball area and a pool for those who would not dare ride the boards.

A Clubhouse is built for the guest’s dining area and for live entertainment. Guests can also chill at the Clubhouse and enjoy round of billiards, darts and football.

The park also boasts of Wi-Fi capability which enables those who can't live without Facebook and other social networking sites (like me, lol!).

Accommodations are walking distance from the park, just be sure to book in advance during peak season. We were lucky that most people went to Baguio, so even if we were walk-ins we got a room to stay for the night.

We were actually planning to stay in a hotel outside of Camsur but the kids love the inviting wood cabins. Julia said it's so cute like a play house. She actually wanted us to build one at home so they can play with it, hahaha!

We stayed in a small cabin for Php 1,850.00 per night (2 persons). It has 1 Queen Size Bed, 1 Living Room with Queen Size Sofa Bed, 2 units split type Air Conditioner, Hot & Cold shower and  intercom. Basic toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothbrush) are not included. Breakfast is also not included. Even a cup of hot water is not available. Well, it's available but you have to pay P10 (ten pesos) per cup! If you plan to stay here, and you can't live without coffee or hot chocolate, bring your electric kettle. Swimming Pool available in CWC is not included in room accommodation. Separate charge applies.

Verdict:

The service by the ladies in the front office turned out bad. Their faces showed irritation as I asked questions about the different accommodations. When I called from the cabin, she put the phone down while I was still talking.

Camsur Water Sports Complex is government-owned but it should not be the reason why the service can't be that well. CWC brings in tourists from here and abroad, and that means, it brings in money to CamSur. I just hope that the government will enhance the kind of service that guests, who traveled far, they deserve.

Special commendation goes to Arnold, Restaurant Supervisor, for patiently answering my queries on why a hot water will be charged P10 per cup. Also, a big thanks to Aaron, Front Office, for booking us at Gota Village Resort in Caramoan Island.

Although there are plenty of repairs to be done inside the complex, Camsur Water Sports Complex is a must visit when in Bicol. The staff told us that they were hit badly by the recent typhoons, hence the unpleasant sights here and there.

Camsur Water Sports Complex will be the venue for next triathlon in June so they're renovating the place in preparation for the said event. It's best to visit starting July because you will not see the se unsightly view...

If you're in a tight budget but plans to visit Camsur Water Sports Complex soon...
This accommodation is  just outside the gate of CWC.
It's good for backpackers. Rates are from 300 to 700 only.

Gota Village Resort in Caramoan Island Review

$

Our Bicol trip was a spur of the moment. It took John and I less than an hour to pack the bags. Without itinerary, we just let the wind, the rain and the wheels to take take us to wherever. The next thing we know, 12 hours lapsed, we were all tired, and we're already in Naga.

On our first day, we enjoyed CWC, visited Mayon, Cagsawa Ruins and Lignon Hill. It was raining the whole time we were there so John and I agreed we should head back home. But then again, we decided to stay for another night and go to Caramoan Island. We had no idea how far and what to expect at Caramoan, so upon the recommendation of Aaron Espera (Front Office Supervisor of CWC), we headed to Gota Village Resort.

From CWC, we drove for an hour going to Sabang Port. We waited for more than an hour at the port because they needed to fill the whole boat. Then a two and a half boat ride going to Gota Island Resort.

Upon stepping the ground of the port, we were asked to pay P20 each as admission and environmental fee.

We were supposed to ride a tricycle going to Gota Village Resort and pay P250, but someone asked where we're headed. When they learned we're going to Gota Village Resort, we were told to ride the service van. I got worried because Aaron didn't mention the van. I had to be sure so I asked the driver how much do we need to pay him. When he said, "it's part of your overnight stay". then we hopped in. It took us 30 minutes from the port to Gota Village Resort.

It's nice to meet fellow travelers, Sam and Joan.

We were famished when we arrived past 2pm, so we headed straight to the restaurant. Unfortunately, the food was served more than an hour! We ate as soon as the food were served, that's why I was not able to take photos. To sate our hunger, we took photos of the place.

There are plenty of activities to be done in Caramoan, unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate.

It was almost 4pm when we went to the beach. With nothing do, we entertained ourselves. I took photos and videos of my family.

Julia enjoyed collecting seashells for her friends

Juancho hopped from one rock to another

The boys checked out the nearby cave

El enjoyed being buried under the sand

John and El gathered seaweeds...

...and meticulously formed the seaweeds into Occasions of Joy.

I enjoyed talking to the residents. The one is red is the Barangay Captain.

Gota Village Resort is the official home of the SURVIVOR staff and crew in Caramoan so we got to see some of the stuff they left at the back part going to the beach.

We knew already how slow they serve food, so I made an advance order right after we finished lunch at 4pm, and specifically told the order taker that we want the food served at 7:30pm, earlier will be better. Unfortunately again, our foods were served more than an hour late! If there's any consolation, Chloe, the food server, was very patient to all the guests. He kept on apologizing to everyone.

Food prices are reasonable but they don't issue official receipt at Gota Village Resort.

The village, I must say, is beautifully planned and designed. Unfortunately it is not well managed by the government.

The imported wood cabins are very cute and clean. We enjoyed this new kind of accommodation.
One bedroom with queen-sized bed was comfortable. John didn't complain of back pain at all.

One single bed at the living area

Big couch where El slept

I like the small, cute and very clean bathroom

The staff are nice but the Front Office lady is not equip to answer properly. They do not have intercom in the rooms, so guests must go to the lobby for whatever room service they need. At 3 in the morning, I went to the lobby to have our bills for we will be out by 6am to catch the 7am boat going back to Sabang Port. There was no one around. I kept on knocking from the front doors, to the side and back but no one was answering. The doors are locked. In the morning, I told the Front Office lady and she insisted that she was there all the time. I refused to ruin my day so I didn't argue with her anymore, but I wanted to tell her, "I was wide awake the whole night because I don't sleep at night".

That's the Front Office girl, having an argument with another guest.

They provide pickup from Guijalo port for free but are you adventurous enough to ride Gota Village Resort's van without a door for 30 minutes?

Verdict:

We like the cute and clean wood cabin accommodation at P1,500 only. If you're not very adventurous people like us, The Mendiolables, this place is not for you.  If the management improves their system , upgrade their facilities like the service van, intercom, add basic toiletries, train the staff for customer service, Gota Village Resort has a bigger potential in the future.

I found this heart-shaped rock at the beach

All in all, we appreciate the time we spent around this side of Caramoan Island for as the famous philosopher and poet said...

“A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.”

Be Cool at Bicol

As John and I were having coffee early on Christmas day, he said, "let's go to Bicol today". Although I've been wanting to see the place (for as long as I can remember) where my mother was born, I wasn't prepared to pack our bags that fast. Plus the kids were still asleep so I told John, "how about tomorrow so I can fix all the things we need to bring?". My husband knows that I hate hot weather, so he said, "let's go there while its cold and be cool at Bicol". The next thing I know, I was grabbing whatever I think we need for the impromptu Bicol trip.

Our first destination was CWC to wakeboard but we arrived around 1am at Naga. Since we didn't have a reservation to any hotel, we parked at the first site of  Flamingo Hotel. I'll make a separate review about this bed and breakfast.

We left as soon as we finished our breakfast.

On the 26th of December, 9am, we were at Camsur Watersports Complex (CWC).

It was so cold that day that Juan and I decided not to wakeboard.

Juan and I checked out CWC accommodations.

By 2pm we were on our way to Albay.

First stop at Casagwa Ruins in Barangay Busay, Cagsawa,
in the municipality of Daraga, Albay

Then in Mayon, where we were not allowed to go near because of the recent eruption alert. It was a rainy-foggy kind of day so Mayon Volcano didn't show her perfect cone.

The rain poured harder when we reached our third and last stop in Leagaspi City inAlbay. Lignon Hill hill stands at 156 meters (511 feet) tall and has the best view of Mayon Volcano and the whole Albay. Unfortunately, because we arrived around 4pm and it was raining the clouds covered most of the view.

At least Juancho got to enjoy zipline. For P250, he got to ride twice, plus a souvenir photo.

We were supposed to find a hotel near the port going to Caramoan Island for an early boat ride but the rain stopped us from seeing the road signs so we headed back at CWC where we spent the night at the Cabin.

On the 27th, upon the recommendation of CWC Front Office, we were booked at Gota Village at Caramoan Island. From CWC, an hour or so drive going to Sabang Port and two hours drive going to Caramoan.

We reached Gota Village Resort in Caramoan Island around 3pm.

On the 28th, we checked out at 5am, to catch the 7am boat ride going to Sabang Port.

On our way back to Manila we passed by Basilica de Penafrancia and other churches.

The Peñafrancia Minor Basilica is located on the outskirts of Naga City—also known as the Piligrim City and Queen City of Bicol

Upon the recommendation of Lea Bongalonta, we had lunch at Biggs Diner
before hitting the long road to Manila.

I thought that our Bicol adventure was done when we reached Quezon Province.  We were all so tired and eager to go home so John and I decided to hit the shorter but steep road of Bituka ng Manok (chicken intestine) at Atimonan, Quezon.

Little did we know that Bituka ng manok is actually a park, Quezon National Forest Park,
where you can trek, dine and buy pasalubong and take lots of pictures.

There we met and shared a seat with a wonderful Sardona family where we exchanged travel stories.

Awarding Children at Home

$

Having confidence and a high self-esteem will benefit a child when he or she is an adult. One way to help your kid or kids achieve these two characteristics is by awarding children at home.

Have you noticed that kids tend to feel good when they know that their effort is recognized? Try telling them over and over that they they are naughty, and that's what the kid will manifest.

Give children recognition awards in every area of their lives to encourage them to be better, and more importantly to make them feel good about themselves. By teaching children to pitch in around the house, it helps them learn responsibility and organizational skills. Parents can recognize the good work that their children have done around the house by giving them awards like what we do at the end of the year.

At 12 years old, twins Julia and Rafael find it funny to receive recognition certificate, but they surely like the P100 that comes with it, lol!

You can award your child for having a clean bedroom and performing other household chores, or by choosing the award that best suit your kids.

Why do we give them money as part of the award? Well, we are also teaching them how to handle their money wisely.

Julia is Most Thoughtful for always making a card for me and her Dad of every occasions.

El received an Early to Bed Award for sleeping the earliest.

Juancho received the Most Cheerful, dapat pa bang i-explain?

El's got the Cleanest Room Award because he keeps it neat which makes it easier for me to clean.

Juancho, The Most Surprising Award,
because he brings home medals from school from winning quiz bee even if he does not study at home.

Julia as The Early Riser because she has the discipline to wake up at 5:30am during school days.

Start recognizing your child's worth...

yet we forget that he is someone today."

8 Things to Let Go Before the Year Ends

$
0
0
As we enter the final hours of 2014, I was thinking of writing about new year's resolution. But nothing comes in mind for I don't believe in making one.  Instead, the word letting go crossed my mind.

So, here it goes, the 8 things to let go before the year ends:

1. Clutter. Clutter is a problem that many people struggle with, and unfortunately, it can lead to constant continued stress and inefficiency.  Who doesn't want a more simplified and organized life? So start packing those clothes, shoes and bags you haven't used for a year. Give it away, you'll feel better.

2. Guilt. Guilt is something we all face at some point in our lifetime because of something we did, and dealing with it can sometimes be difficult. I say, forgive yourself.  No one else can make that guilt go except you.  Do not let the guilt of your actions haunt you for the rest of your life. You have to move on from your past and give your present a chance.

3. Anger and Bitterness - Holding on to anger and bitterness is potentially hazardous to health . It creates tension and stress that may lead to high blood pressure or worse, heart attack. Remind yourself that anger hurts you more than the person you are angry with. Visualize anger and bitterness melting away as an act of kindness to yourself.

4. Debt.  Live within your means. Stop buying expensive stuff just so you can show off.  Getting rid of debt changes everything. It will change your relationship with money and give you freedom that you can’t imagine. You can also sleep well.

5. Worry. Worrying kills happiness. Let go of the fear of the unknown; take one small step and watch the path reveal itself. Live each day as if it's your last day on earth.

6. Negative Perception. Change your perception from negative to positive. It’s one of many stories that remind us if you think you can’t, you can’t, and if you think you can, you can!

7. Blaming others. Let go of blaming anyone for anything and be accountable for your own action, for by doing so, you empower yourself. Your destiny awaits your decision, not of someone else's.

8. Past Relationships.  Some people come into your life just to strengthen you or make you stronger. Simply forget the past, look straight ahead and forge toward the future.

(Quote Images source: Internet)

Letting go of anything in life isn’t easy for most of us. It's a little scary because we are accustomed into holding on to something or someone we love but letting go is necessary for it is an amazing act of self-love, well-being and growth.

Letting go is scary but when fear subsides,
all you are left with is joy.”

Cagsawa Ruins

Cagsawa Ruins, also spelled as Kagsawa or Cagsaua, is one of the most visited places in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. It shows the remains of the 18th-century Franciscan church, which was built in 1724.

When in Bicol, you shouldn't miss this tourist spot. It's just that, the sound coming from the unpleasant speakers, ruins the solemnity of the place. It would be better if the people in-charge there will play classical music that suits the place better.

There were trashes here and there. We saw diaper on top of one of the ruins which makes the place dirty. I hope that the tourists will be more disciplined while enjoying the view of  Cagsawa Ruins and the surrounding areas.

From this view, you can actually have a nice view of Mayon Volcano.
Unfortunately for us, it was a foggy-kind of day.

What can you do while in Cagsawa Ruins? The girls can take lots and lots of photos, while the boys can rent and ride an ATV.

Have a taste of pinangat and sili shake

Buy souvenir and pasalubong.

Let Manila kids taste an authentic Bicol favorites - pinangat and bicol express.

If you're lucky, catch a rainbow and follow the end. Who knows, you might find a pot of gold.

Star's Healthy Chicken Adobo

If you frequent this blog, you know I'm not much into cooking. Each and every new year, I always plan to be better at cooking but no to avail. Up until now I can only cook, with confidence, chicken curry, beef steak, afrida, pork binawangan and my malunggay spaghetti.

If you noticed, adobo is not a part of my list. A lot of friends and relatives have taught me how they cook adobo.  When I cook, my adobo turns out to be asado or steak.

As I start the year, it's great to share my friend's recipe, which I call Star's Healthy Chicken Adobo. I first tasted this some 4 years ago. I like how Star cooks it - no skin, no frying and with lots of pineapple tidbits.

By the way, Star is really a star. She's an actress for TV Series, Films and TV Commercials. Her recent film Tumbang Preso earned her good reviews.

TPLEX

John and I expected to reach Vigan by 7am, but lo and behold, we made it at 2am because of TPLEX - Tarlac–Pangasinan–La Union Expressway. TPLEx is an 88.85-kilometer four-lane expressway that connects central to northern Luzon, with its southernmost terminal located in Tarlac City. It was a breeze drive as we didn't have to pass every town of Tarlac. The final section ending in Rosario, La Union, is slated for completion in 2015/2016.

Karen, our GPS cannot recognize TPLEX. It keeps on leading us to the usual way, which has a smaller road.

Going up North is now a lot convenient, with a nice view because of TPLEX.

Tourists and travelers who wish go to Baguio, La Union, Vigan, Ilocos, Pagudpud,
use TPLEX for a faster ride.

Sorbet

I hate wasting anything, specially food. Have you noticed that a lot of fruit goes to waste after New Year's Eve? I like fruits but I cannot finish the 12 pairs, more actually, that we prepare to welcome the new year.

To make sure that none of these fruits are wasted, I freeze them the moment I wake every first of January to be made into sorbet or shake.  My favorite among the fruits, watermelon.

Sorbet is the French equivalent of the British water ice.
Sorbet is a frozen fruit dessert typically made with a sweetener and a fruit puree.
I made my watermelon sorbet sugar free so this is a lot healthy than eating ice cream

The word "sorbet" is possibly derived from the Italian verb "sorbire" (to imbibe). However, the root is present in such Indo-European languages as Greek and Persian for example. The English word "sherbet" entered English directly from the Turkish in the early 17th century.

Other folklore holds that Nero, the Roman Emperor, invented sorbet during the first century AD when he had runners along the Appian way pass buckets of snow hand over hand from the mountains to his banquet hall where it was then mixed with honey and wine.

Adobo Flakes
