Ruby Sparks Movie

$

0

For the past five days, I've watched around 10 movies, two in cinema and the rest in DVDs rented at Video City. First I wanted to make a review of Tom Cruise's Oblivion, or about the  Life of Pi but I can't get the juice flowing. Now that I finished watching Ruby Sparks, there's something to write about.  Ruby Sparks is a 2012 romantic comedy-drama film directed by Jonathan Dayton (he also directed another favorite movie, Little Miss Sunshine).

I love love stories and this movie definitely kept my eyes open despite the heat. For those into make believe love stories, this one is worth watching. The movie revolves around the young novelist who struggles with writer's block having not written a full book since his first successful publication at 19.

Starring Paul Dano as Calvin Weir-Fields and Zoe Kazan as Ruby Tiffany Sparks, a woman who initially is a dream and inspires Paul Dano's character to write about her until she eventually manifests herself fully in his life. And oh by the way, Zoe Kazan is also the writer of this brilliant movie.

Also in the movie, Annette Bening as Gertrude, Calvin's mother and Antonio Banderas as Mort, the carefree boyfriend of Calvin's mother.

Official Synopsis:

Calvin is a struggling novelist, paralysed by writer’s block. Encouraged by his therapist to write about his dream girl, Calvin creates Ruby and his reality is turned upside down when she suddenly materializes in his apartment, in love with him and precisely as he’s written her.

Lessons from the Life of Pi Movie

My son, Rafael, was telling John and I to buy the bluray of the movie Life of Pi because it's nice unfortunately he was not able to finish it when it was shown in their school last February.

Nora and her daughters watched it ahead of us. Nora said it has many quotable quotes, ka-blog-blog ka nga daw sabi nya. Her daughters, Maizi and Jill, liked the movie too.

Of course by now many have already watched the Life of Pi movie, having won four academy awards including Best Director and Best Cinematography.

Two days ago, I was fortunate to get fresh DVD copy of Life of Pi from Video City. So how was it? This is a movie worth watching for the whole family. It teaches valuable lessons in life such as perseverance, hope, love. faith and more.

The Life of Pi has been a source of conversation during our brunch and dinner for two consecutive days. Juancho, who's just 7, still cannot grasp much of the underlying moral of the story. But twins Julia and Rafael, at ten years old, absorbed the wisdom imparted by the movie.

Below are some the quotes I jot down while watching...

"Believing in everything at the same time is the same as not believing in anything at all".
(ito ay bagay sa mga taong balimbing. Yung pangiti-ngiti lang, na okay lang ang lahat. Bagay sa mga taong walang paninindigan sa buhay. Do we see a lot of them in politics?)

"How can he find his way if he does not choose his path"
(much like the line, jack of all trade, master of none. Dapat alam mo kung san ka tutungo, if not, you'll get lost in thin air)

"Doubt is useful, it keeps faith a living thing,
after all you cannot know the strength of your faith until it's been tested"

Bo's Coffee and The Boss Behind It's Success

One of the perks of blogging is meeting interesting and successful people.  Yesterday, I was privilege to meet the man behind Bo's Coffee, Mr. Steve D. Benitez - Bos' Coffee Founder and CEO. Other business owners would simply task their Marketing Managers to meet Bloggers and explain their new products, but not Mr. Benitez.  He even arrived earlier than the specified time of the event.

Mr. Steve D. Benitez - Bos' Coffee Founder and CEO
Sir Steve walked us through his love for coffee as well as how he started Bo's Coffee business.  Bo’s Coffee is a proudly homegrown specialty coffee brand, and since 1996, it has grown to include around 56 outlets strategically located in Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Iloilo, Bohol and Tacloban.

Sir Steve introduced us all to The Philippine Origins product line, namely Benguet, Sagada, Matutum, and  Kitanglad. The Philippine Origins is a homegrown brand Bo’s Coffee is inviting everyone to try out . These coffee beans are named after the places where they are sourced - Benguet, Sagada, Mt. Matutum, and Mt. Kitanglad.  These four are roasted to perfection by artisan roasters, these coffee beans also reflect the vision of a brand that dreams of putting Philippine coffee back on the map.  “The Philippine Origins product line is a celebration of the country’s culture and its great coffee. All of our beans underwent a rigorous cupping process in order to make sure that our customers will get only the best from us” Sir Steve said.

What’s fascinating about these Single Origin Arabica beans is that it enables coffee lovers to get to know the featured places in a different way through its flavor profile. Sagada, for example, has a sweet, nutty, and well balanced taste, with hints of chocolate and fresh tobacco. Benguet, which is near Sagada, is also well balanced, with herbal notes. Mt. Matutum, which is located in Mindanao, features a berry-like and spicy taste, and Mt. Kitanglad, which is also in Mindanao, is perfect for coffee drinkers who are looking for something light and nutty, with a hint of floral undertones. These Single Origin coffee beans are available at the following Bo’s Coffee branches: Bonifacio High Street, Glorietta 5, SM Mall of Asia, Newport, Galleria, SM North EDSA, NAIA1, Jupiter Makati, Solenad, and Megamall.

I'm fairly familiar with this line because I buy Benguet at Bo's for my husband. What surprised me about this intimate invite is the Pour Over Method demo. My husband likes brewed coffee but when electricity is out it's a problem. With Pour Over Method demo I learned an alternative way of preparing brewed coffee - the manual way. The Pour Over Method requires a steady hand, a brew bar, a V60 cone, a swan kettle, a weighing scale, and precise water and temperature measurements in order to produce a flavorful cup of coffee, and it is certainly a delight to watch.

Philippine Origins product line and  Pour Over demo are both only available in certain stores in Manila, but they’re planning to make a lot of changes in order to further improve their products and services.  For more information, visit www.boscoffee.com

Different Types of Scars

Raised or hypertrophic scars – scars confined to the area where the original wound was; are caused by overproduction of connective tissue fibers; tend to bulge and protrude above level of surrounding skin

Keloids – massive overproduction of connective tissue fibers; scars grow beyond the original wound edges;

Burn scars – result from damage to deep layers of the skin and are associated with formation of contractures that restrict movement

No scar should keep you from turning a new leaf and making 2013 the best year of your life yet! The best way to do this is to let go of the past and leave it all in the year that was. Now you can, with Contractubex! Contractubex is a clinically proven treatment that combines the triple action of Cepae Extract, Heparin and Allantoin to help reduce the appearance of these unsightly marks on your skin.

You may notice that there are several other scar treatments available in the market today. What makes Contractubex different from other scar treatments is that its ingredients help reduce inflammation and prevent excessive scar formation. Its water-soluble ointment base allows active ingredients to penetrate into deeper layers of the skin.

1.Cepae Extract (special onion extract)
- anti-inflammatory and bactericidal effect
- reduces swelling and prevents excessive growth of connective tissue
2.    Heparin
        - softens the tissue structure
        - anti-inflammatory effect
        - hydrates scar tissue
3.Allantoin
- encourages wound healing
- has a soothing effect

Contractubex comes in a gel form that makes for its easy application on the skin. Just rub Contractubex on the affected area 3-4 times a day or as prescribed by your doctor.  Results may be seen after at least 3 months of use so don’t lose hope when you don’t see results early on.  Just follow the instructions carefully and be consistent in applying it on your scars.  You’ll know that Contractubex is working when you notice a reduction in redness, relief of tension and less itching on the scar area.  Contractubex works best on fresh scars, when the wound is completely closed.

The grueling and exciting Manila Millions 2013 finally ended last night at around 930pm.  The record setting Manila Millions started with 18 elite poker players each putting up HKD$1,000,000, the biggest buy-in tournament ever held in Asia.

From among the 18 elite poker players, including PokerAce Pros Joe Hachem, JC Tran and Nam Le as well as  Phil Ivey, John Juanda, Jonny Chan and many more, Manila Millions Poker 2013 Winner is Joseph Cheong of USA. He won a total of  HK$10,428.00.

Right after pictures from media I was able to get a quick interview with the 25 year old Joseph Cheong. He was born in Seoul, Korea, moved to La Mirada, California, USA when he was about six or seven. He earned two degrees at the University of California at San Diego, a B.S. in psychology and a B.A. in a double concentration, mathematics and economics. He started playing poker, primarily online poker when he cannot find a 9-to-5 job.  He even told me, it was a blessing in disguise that he was not able to land a job because this got him this far in poker tournament. He has no girlfriend at present. When asked what's he's going to do with his winnings, he joyfully said, "I'll use it to play poker again!". With that said, see you again next time, Joseph Cheong, for the next big poker tournament.

Their common responses, they have no hidden charges, the plan is flexible, and the service is fast and efficient.

One of the three prizes I won in Caribbean Blog contest was two tickets worth four thousand pesos for Wellness Night last April 20 at the Presidential Suite of Richmonde Hotel Ortigas. I have little knowledge about this event. All they said was it will be facilitated by a well-known nutritionist. As  a firm believer of good nutrition, I made sure to attend this event even if I was given a short notice.

We were warmly greeted by a very accommodating, fabulous and Anjanette Abayari look-a-like lady. Little did we know that she is the CEO, USA-Registered Dietitian Miss Cheshire Que, RND, RN, RD. Cheshire introduced us to two more very nice ladies, Miss Genevieve Dayrit, RND and Ms. Solita Sayco, RND.  These three registered nutritionist-dietitians met 15 years ago and became friends when they were studying at the University of the Philippines Diliman. In pursuing wellness and the passion to share their knowledge, skills and experience to help make a healthier nation they created A-List Professional Health Consulting Co.

That Old Summer Dress

The weather news projected that today will be hotter than the previous days. Instead of complaining why not make it a  perfect day by wearing your favorite summer dress.  A perfect summer dress must be light, colorful and breezy. It is a perfect summer dress when you feel good wearing it even when you're bloated. It is a perfect summer dress  when you don't have to hustle to hide the extra weight. It should have that right level of comfort as well as makes you feel fashionable without overdoing it.

Remember, your summer dress can be any color but avoid black and white. Black can be too serious.     and white can be too prissy. Summer means fun so go ahead buy that perfect summer dress you've been eyeing for so long. Or maybe start digging out your closet for your favorite summer dress.

Here's my most favorite summer dress I bought on sale at Mint at P350, some 4 years ago. I wore it in some of the happiest and most memorable days of my life.  Below are some photos:

Casa San Pablo - A Place Worth Going Back To

I'm sure parents can relate with me when kids continuously remind that place they want to go back to again, and again, and again. Julia, Rafael and Juan are just like those kids and because it's summer they're wondering when we're going back at Casa San Pablo.

Casa San Pablo is a place worth going back to...Let me count the many reasons:

First, you get to learn about the history of San Pablo and its vast coconut plantation thru a virtual tour, facilitated by An Alcantara (Casa San Pablo's owner).

Second, kids will be taught to cook Pinoy food, the San Pablo City way,  like ginataan halo-halo,
inihaw na talong and many more.

Third, enjoy Casa San Pablo's two pools.

Fourth, rest on the hammock sprawled at the center of this huge land.

Fifth, enjoy exchanging family stories, hotdogs and marshmallows during Bonfire night

Fifth, learn clay art

Took clay pottery seriously and created a man and a woman sitting in a heart-shaped pillow

This clay figure I made represents John and I
And for the most important part, bring home with you great photos  as Casa San Pablo
is a perfect venue for pictorial for it provides that homey yet elegant surrounding

The Hat That Got Away

Some of the events I cover means meeting actors and models. When I see them wearing those fashionable hats, I always wonder if it's going to look good on me.
With Aubrey Miles at Vans Off The Wall event

Saw G Toengi not in an event but while buying books
at Fullybooked in Greenhills.

Being a late bloomer, I am slowly reinventing myself so when we went in Baguio,
I tried on this hat ...

Juancho, as a very sweet and loving son, said, "Mom, it looks bagay on you, buy it na."

I then asked Julia, "okay ba, Ate, does it look good on me?". The shy and soft-spoken Julia replied, "it's nice, Mom.".

I called on Rafael for his opinion, "El, is it nice?". El said, "oh, yeah, cool, get it".

Di pa din nakuntento..."Dad, what do you think?". John answered me with a question, "gusto mo ba?". Hmmm, we went back in Manila without that hat.

I'm still wondering though, bagay kaya sa akin that hat that got away? Di naman kaya trying hard magsuot ng hat sa mainit na lugar ng Maynila?

Bloggers Tour at iACADEMY

I always see the sign  iACADEMY while driving along Ayala. I am not familiar with this school although I know it's been there for more than ten years now. With Az , of Azrael's Merryland, invite to tour iACADEMY I immediately said yes because I am curious to learn what this school is all about.

Upon entrance to the reception area, smiling and courteous faces greeted us. Lunch was served prior to talk and tour as we wait for all the invited Bloggers to arrive.

While having lunch, I flipped their brochures and learned that iACADEMY is led by some of the most brilliant minds in business and education. To name a few, Washington Sycip, the founder of SGV, Eusebio Tanco, the president of Asian Terminals Inc. and chairman of Philplans, Philcare, and my idol Teddy Locsin.

After the introductions and tour, iACADEMY inspired me to pursue my passion in Fashion Design and Technology for the following five strong factors:

1.  High-end facilities which provide conducive and effective learning environment.

Sewing room

Mac room
2.  Professors are all industry professionals and expert academicians.

3   Classes are a maximum of 30 students per class

4.  They have an internship program, where student interns work full-time with partner companies for at least 960 hours with professionals. This model has resulted in a 98% job placement success rate of iACADEMY graduates to date.

5.  Academic Advising, Coaching, and Enhancement (ACE) Program provides students a support system that helps students adjust to college life, learn, pass the rigors of academic requirements, and enjoy in the process.

Double Wedding Tips and Ideas

$
0
0
A double wedding is a double ceremony where two couples, typically a fiancé with a sibling who is also engaged or four close friends, rendezvous for two simultaneous weddings.

It was my second time to be the Ninang in a wedding but my first time to attend a double wedding ceremony as my friend, Star, asked me to be the Ninang of her sis Anne and brother-in-law Ronnel.  Also to be wed that day is Star's brother, Don  and Maross.

Although not very many Filipinos resort to double wedding due to pamahiin (belief) in sukob, I personally think that this is one of those weddings that is for the record, a joyful one.  Imagine seeing double cake,  double wedding bouquet and double couple kissing, that is equal to double fun and happiness.

This double wedding was conceptualized, organized and hosted by Star (oh my starry, starry Star!)

Holding two wedding ceremonies is possible but it takes a lot more effort than the usual ceremony.  Sometimes, two weddings can indeed be better than one. Here are some tips to make that double wedding a success:

1.  Keep the reception program simple. Stick to the traditional cake cutting, bouquet throwing or just like what Star did, do the trip to jerusalem game instead of bouquet throwing. That way you save more time.

2. Ask the guests politely to not bring small children to give way to the 2 couples special guests.

3. To cut down on expenses, keep desserts simple. A better way is to have that wedding cake as the dessert.

4.  For favors, consider buying chocolate or candies in bulk. All that needs to be done is wrapping, bagging or boxing it nicely.

5.  Or hire a wedding planner, consider Occasions of Joy Events Planning and Hosting.

Occasions of Joyoffers great wedding coordination package to create a memorable wedding experience for the couple and their guests. Our goal is to inspire couples to think outside the box when it comes to weddings.

With my talented and super kulit friend, Star.
